Themis Mantzavinos
was born on the
island of Mitilene,
Greece on June 26,
1947. He graduated
from the University
of Athens Medical
School in l971 with
honors. After two
years of obligatory
service in the Greek
Army, he completed
one year of medical
training at the
peripheral hospital,
which is obligatory
of all graduated
medical doctors.
Following this he
began his residency
in Obstetrics and
Gynecology in the
second Department of
OB/GYN at the
University of Athens
Medical School,
Areteion Hospital.
In 1977 Dr.
Mantzavinos became a
lecturer in
obstetrics and
gynecology at the
Athens University
Medical School at the
Areteion Hospital. In
February l982 he took
a sabbatical from the
University to accept
a fellowship offer
from the Jones
Institute for
Reproductive Medicine
at the Eastern
Virginia Medical
School. Dr.
Mantzavinos worked as
a fellow in the in
vitro fertilization
Program and was a
member of the team
that delivered the
first IVF baby in the
United States –
Elizabeth Carr.
In l987 he received
his Ph.D. in
Gynecology/Endocrinology;
in l989 he became an
Assistant Professor
at the University and
in l996 Dr.
Mantzavinos became an
Associate Professor
at the University of
Athens Medical
School.
From l985-l989 Dr.
Mantzavinos organized
the first IVF Clinic
at the Mitera
Maternity Hospital in
Athens. He later
became the Director
of the Euromedica IVF
Clinic where he has
continued as Director
until the present
time. Also, in l995
Dr. Mantzavinos
organized the
University IVF clinic
at the Areteion
Hospital in Athens.
In September, 2001,
Dr. Mantzavinos
received the Gold Key
of the city of
Athens. The Key was
presented from the
Mayor of the City of
Athens in recognition
of his IVF program.
