THE HOWARD AND GEORGEANNA JONES
FOUNDATION FOR REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE
Officers and Directors

Stephen Wainger

Stephen Wainger is one of the founding members of the Foundation for the Howard and Georgeanna Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, contributing financially and as an advisor/volunteer to the Jones Institute since l978. Steve and his wife, Liza, who is an Honorary Director of the Foundation, responded to a television reporter’s interview of Drs. Howard and Georgeanna Jones wherein the reporter questioned the doctors about the viability of beginning an in vitro fertilization program in Norfolk, Virginia. At the time of the interview, the world was still reeling from the birth of the first test-tube baby in England, Louise Brown. Upon hearing the positive response of Drs. Joneses, the Waingers placed a phone call – offering to provide whatever capital was needed to begin the same program in the United States. And so began the Jones Institute.

Mr. Wainger is a l967 graduate of Tulane University and received his law degree in l970 from T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. His career began as a trial attorney for the Department of Justice in Washington, DC. After serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia and then in private practice in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, he retired in 2004.

Civic activities for Mr. Wainger included membership as a trustee on the following boards: Norfolk Academy, the Contemporary Arts Center, the Urban League of Hampton Roads, Cape Henry Collegiate School and the Jones Institute Foundation. His volunteerism extended to Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University where he was a member of the Development Committee at each school.
